Jeans/Denim experiment

Working in the style of Haris Lithos, I decided to continue the prints however use clothing. The choice of clothing I used were denim jeans, I chose these as I wanted the detail and texture of the fabric as it is much different to plastic and regular cotton. As I've been doing my previous prints though I noticed I had been using just back and white paper, so I went through my past project which was my utopian dream and discovered some paintings of backgrounds I used for the hanging blocks. I thought rather than it going to waste I decided to print on the coloured paper I designed to see if it looked better. By using the paper it also links with my colour theory behind this project. I chose to use lighter colours first so that the darker colours didn't mix with the whites, yellows and pinks when printing afterwards. I made one leg slightly pink and red but added a large smudge of yellow to contrast the colours. The opposite leg however I painted fully white to again compare and contrast. In little areas I noticed when I printed the jeans the colours had blended and mixed, for example on the bottom it created a burnt orange and light pink, I like that it did this naturally as I wasn't aiming for everything to be as I wanted it to go. The outcome went well because I like how in certain areas the paint didn't come off, they made little patches of green showing through. Another area I like of this print is the detail of the pockets and buttons on the waist, this gave me an idea to use a very dark colour to see even more of the detail.

Lastly I painted the jeans back. I did this so that I can get more detail from the fabric and certain areas such as the waist. I went around the yellow smudge as I wanted the yellow smudge on that area too. However this didn't work as well as I thought it would this is because I left it too late and the yellow had fully dried onto the denim. What I do think that went well though, was the contrast of the black to the orange and white background. I feel like it looks similar to a holiday poster of some kind or even a billboard poster. This was not the intention I was going for but my reason for doing this experiment was to express colour and see what colours work well and what doesn't. I like the idea of using a different material to print with, however I feel I won't continue doing this as it isn't big or bold enough.
