Body Metamorphosis Project

The idea for this piece came from a variety of my current and past work. Ideas from my life drawing were involved and my printing work too. However the main ideas have come from my research but not just interest research most of it has come from trips to museums, the Madrid trip, London trip and even everyday life. I got the printing ideas from the artists named Haris Lithos who does real life human body prints but only buttocks and Henri Matisse which does a lot of human prints with paper. Also I got the colour theory from Mondrian and De stijl which use the primary colours. Although researching about these artists on the internet have helped, seeing their work in the flesh has given me this idea for these prints. Observation wise, life drawing has been at the side whilst I have been printing to look at them whilst performing these prints to aid and help me with proportions and angles. Below are photographs of the first stage of the human body prints I have worked my way from the top to the bottom of the human figure and begun with the face. I have choice thick black paint for the first prints and will experiment with colours further on into the prints.

Here are the results of the face prints. Im very happy with them as I feel they have created a ghostly feel to them and have naturally formed themselves into a abstract looking printed face.

Sticking with the face prints I washed my models face and chose an orange coloured acrylic paint to print with next. I did this to brighten up the face but also see if it worked or not for the following prints to come. I guided her to print with her  mouth open to see what that would create and added slight hints of red in the dark areas for tone.I did a full faced one them experimented with a long one and lastly just a mouth. I feel these turned out much different to the first six as they seem harder to detect what they really are. This excites me that I naturally didn't intend on doing that so continuing this method is what I will do.

For the next stage down I began with the breasts. I chose red for the particular print as it stood out the me because of the contrast with the blacks and oranges already used. Like these prints in particular as they are clearly printed and quite neat. I chose to do different angles of the chest as one is shown with just a left breast printed and the other with just the right. Also to add extra detail I painted white areas for the lighter sections on the chest and printed them to see if they would mix or contrast with the red, This created a textured look to the breasts and made the not as simple as the other three prints.

Next we went to the lower stage and painted the stomach. These prints are my favourite as the colour really stands out to all the others. At first I didn't think the first print worked that well as there was too much paint on but as the prints continued the belly button became clear and clearer to see. Like the breasts prints I did the left and the right hip separately to get just the details of them two together but just not in one print. Also like the print before I added white to highlight areas and leave the blue to darken the areas that needed it. How the cracks and markings in the prints fascinate me and create much more detail than expected, doing these prints were giving me confidence when asking the model to perform and print but also letting me see another side to art.

For the final stage I chose to do the buttocks. This is linking with Haris Lithos's work but I did it in my own style, I chose to try it out with clothes on just to change it up a little. So I asked the model to bring in some jeans she would not want anymore as they would get ruined.  I chose jeans as it went well with printing them in my previous work so I thought it may work this time, as the detail of the denim, the pockets and buttons stood out in the prints very well. So I chose yellow as I hadn't used this colour before, this was a mistake as it didn't show up any detail it only had the buttocks outline. I also chose the wrong colour to add darkness underneath the cheeks, this created a large black smudge which I dislike very much.

After looking back at my mistakes on the colour choice I went back to bold colours and chose a strawberry pink. This worked much better as it was presented much clearer and obvious, however getting the correct proportion and angle of the buttocks onto the paper was difficult as she had to jump on the paper for it to be printed enough. These prints were all done on a plain white roll of wallpaper, I chose wallpaper as I believe I could show the stages of the body developing through the prints like the definition of the metamorphosis butterfly but with a human, as well as linking my theory and meaning in with the theme, which is to use colour. These prints were all done on a plain white roll of wallpaper, as I believe I could show the stages of the body developing through the prints like the definition of the metamorphosis butterfly but with a human figure instead. As well as linking my theory and meaning in with the theme, which is to use colour. The wallpaper idea came from an Italian artists named Pinot Gallizio, I discovered him in the Tate Modern in London.
