Robert oxley

When I was looking in an art gallery in sheffield I came across an artists that caught my eye. His name is Robert Oxley, he does wildlife paintings as well as pencil drawings. However the artwork that Im intrigued to look into is his wildlife paints. I like the colour and how abstract they are, I find it fascinating how the colours have ran and blended as he is working with the paint. The image below is what I took, the art gallery only had a couple of paintings a like but these stood out the most. Im unsure on how I could link this work with my current art work stage, however I would like to experiment and try working like he'd does and testing out several colours when doing so.

Although the paintings in the gallery were very inspiring I decided to research into his work further and look at more of his paintings. I came across two paintings that I like very much. The lion painting is named Majesty and the painting of the panda is named Pandemonium. I like his choice on the names of the paintings as they relate but have a very quirky story behind them. Again, I loved the chosen colours in these paintings, how the tones of oranges and reds blend make the image really stand out to me. Ive also noticed in Oxley's work that he specialises on the eyes as well, I think this is because he wants them to stand out from all the multicolours and to be quite intense when the audience is admiring his work. The choice of colour for the background is important as well, as having a very light background brings out the painting much more as all the colours contrasts with each other. This technique I know I will defiantly use in future work, as using colour is a very important interest of mine.

“My work is all about letting go and transforming… whatever your situation and not giving up. The best thing about being an artist is that everything in your imagination, needn’t be stuck in your head.” – Robert Oxley

The quote above is on Robert Oxley's website page.  I'd like to say I can relate with this quote some how as my work is different to his but we work in similar ways. This is because I feel that keeping ideas in your head for them to simply fill up and be kept to yourself and not being expressed or shown to anyone else is a waste, thats why I do so much experimenting as doing so wouldn't do any harm and can only progress further with skills, ideas and techniques.  Clearly the reason he does this work is to transform ideas and expand his imagination and by doing so he creates such amazing colourful pieces of art.
