After a year of working without a pencil doing life drawing, I found it hard as I had forgotten how to measure the angles and the proportion of the body using a pencil. So my first attempt, in my opinion was very poor as the facial details and the whole proportion of the body was wrong. I feel thew fact that we only had ten minutes was difficult as well a this was not enough time to draw the detail we need. However because it was our first lesson in a while these were only meant to be basic human outlines and less detail as possible. My teacher wanted me to focus on the figure and the proportion of the body first, before I started adding colour and using a different material. I attempted to use the marking lines to measure out where body parts were. I began with the shoulders and neck line, then marked which way the hips slouched and knees, this didn't help a lot as I didn't measure it properly in the first place but it helped slightly to keep the length of the body right. In the second image below I attempted a back view of the woman and focussed on the shoulders and her head. I feel the proportion of her head is almost correct, although it does still need work. I focussed on the shoulder mainly in this drawing so I can hopefully get them right in my further life drawing lessons.
Drawing the model in this position was very difficult as I didn't have a good angle to draw, meaning there wasn't many features to draw and less detail than others. However I still tempted to draw her back, I found sketching the shoulder blades hard as my attempt was quite poor and I just drew lines. I need to work on my shading and tones in the darker areas of the body. In this particular piece I like the shoulders as I feel they are measured out correctly. This is because I used the pencil technique, I stretched my arm fully out and placed my dumb on the pencil and held it tightly, I then measured from her head to her shoulders then drew a dot, then from that dot I did the same until I got to her lower back. This worked quite well as I got some of the proportions correctly and the angles were almost accurate in my opinion, working with this technique is working well so I will carry it on in my life drawing. Another feature I struggled on was her hand and the length of her arm, I feel the arm is too long and the hand very out of proportion. I asked my teacher for advise on it and he taught me to draw a 3D box to start of with then simply add the detail afterwards. However because we only have a certain amount of time I couldn't complete the hand and just focussed on the main body outline. I feel I need to research into life drawing so I can gain more skills for me and help improve life drawing techniques.
After practicing a couple of ten minute sketches, we did some twenty minute drawings and I decided to experiment with another material. So I used oil pastels, I experimented with different colours as shown in the image. I found it hard to draw the woman as a seated position is very hard because of the angle of her legs and arms. Although using oil pastels were a lot easier for me as I feel using them makes me feel like I don't have to be precise with the lines, I also enjoy making it more abstract as they are an abstract like material. Im happy with the one on the left as I think the shoulders are quite accurate because of doing the first couple of experiments with measuring I feel I progressed with it. The one on the right however is slightly out of proportion but it all is still good practice. Next week I will hopefully experiment with more new materials when life drawing and see if I can progress in my measurement technique.
