These three canvases below are test pieces for my last piece idea. I tried using wire, scrim and just normal canvas material to see which works better and makes the piece stronger to hold the plaster. I used newspaper to create a bulge for the plaster so that it makes a bump for the ink to run over. That is one of my ideas, I'm not sure if it will work though as when I pop the balloons with darts I don't know where the ink will run or splatter. However, I feel thats the fun in it, not knowing what it would look like and where the ink would go. I will experiment on the position of the balloons and how I will attach them, I might glue them or even pin them on.
Following the progress of the experiments I made some plaster. I made it quite think so I was able to mould it, instead of it being very runny and thin. The canvas on the right I put more on as another experiment to see what the outcome would be. To link with artist I'm working on, Niki De Saint Phalle I paint them all white using acrylic paint because that is what sh does in her sculpture and painting work. I will then pin or some how attach the ink bombs to the plaster pieces and began to burst them.
These are the results after experimenting throwing the darts and the ink balloons. I filled one of them black, one pink and one blue. I did this to see what colours looked best and what didn't show up and stood out as much. For example, the black stood out a lot and ran though the cracks and holes in the plaster, also with the black one I used scrim and after it had all dried it was very strong and robust. However with the normal canvas it leaked through the material but the pink ink worked well in my opinion because of how bright and vibrant it is. Although them two colours worked perfect the blue was a very weak and you can barely see it. Popping them were quite difficult as my accuracy wasn't very good, they also weren't going into the plaster and kept falling out and bouncing off. For the rest of my plaster work I will defiantly use pink and black ink and void the blue. However I might add more ink into it instead of added lots of water, I will experiment. I will also use scrim for the support of the plaster sculptures as this was a very sturdy material to use and it helped hold it together.
