Hannah Hoch Research and experimental work

Hannah Hoch was another famous Dada artist, she was german and she was best known for her work in the weimar period was she was one of the originators of photomontage. She created collages as well as other artists but used her own unique style with it. She would create a simple background and then use human body parts to create a new composition but in an abstract humorous way. As shown below the image of the female is called "made for a party" it was created in 1986. I chose this image as I like the large eye on her foot, I find it strange and random. However the picture next to that one is named "Bouquet of eyes", it was created in 1930 and was mad bout of cut outs of eyes and parts of flowers. This is one of my favourite collages she made as I love how colourful and vibrant it is. Also I like how it attracts me to look at it using the amount of eyes and chosen colours. I will use both of this images as inspiration and ideas for future work.

From Hannah's work I've used humour and fun with in my art work. The first two I created were of print outs of two very famous paintings; The girl with the pearl keyring 1902 oil paint and American Gothic 1903 oil paint. I then searched through newspapers and magazines to find quirky and funny images to add to these paintings. For the couple in the American gothic painting I found flames of fire and the Rolling stones band logo and simply placed them onto their heads to make it a humours and exciting image and change the mood of the painting into something much more fun and happy. Same as The girl with the pearl earring, using newspapers mainly this time, I made the painting laughable and almost cartoon like. I also included the word Dada to influence the affect it brought to that particular period and to this day and age. Now the image below these two is using a lot of Hannah's work, this is because I used a lot of eyes in this piece and experimented with changing the body parts of males and females but also alluring the eye sizes and colours to create work like hannah but in my own way. Again I used letters from the word "Dada" to make the piece more exciting and made the background similar to how she does it, a simple background thats all the same but I change it slightly and used paragraphs from the newspaper. If I was to make this work better I would try using a different material, such as paint or clay. As I could create a clay head and make the facial features abstract and funny same with the paint.
