My fifth design for the British Values poster

My fifth idea for the British values poster came from my teacher. He advised us to choose only one image that links with all of the 5 cores British values so that it has a greater impact on the viewer, so for an object I chose a key. However I began looking at birds and butterflies as they both symbolise freedom and respect. Although I then looked back into my minimal poster design research and got an idea of turning the key into a smile or even the end of the key forming into a happy face. This is because I want to show that we respect the British values and that we are all equal, which creates an impact on everyone to be happier.

I have taken photos of keys to see how I could use them with in my fifth poster Ive done this as the use of a key symbolises individuality and how we are all equal. I chose two styles of keys to to take a photo of to see which suits the poster more and which one is more effective. I chose the plane white background so the key is the main object in the photo and so it stands out. I will develop my ideas for this idea further by doing sketches in my sketchbook and research into how the key can be positioned for the correct effect.

After taking images of keys I then chose the best image and put it into photoshop, I needed my own photo of a key as the one in the image above is from google and was only a template so by choosing my own key and designing it myself shows that it is my own work. When I first placed it into the photoshop document I experimented with the curves and levels, although I changed the curves to green and experimented with different tones of colours first just to see what to would look like, in the end I feel it wasn't a good look as it took away the similarity of it and the powerful meaning to the image so I stayed with black and white. However after doing that I looked into a new tool I haven't used before and selected exposure, this helped me change the saturation of the image and the contrast of the colours and made the key slightly pixelated which is the look I was going for. Then finally I went on to selective colour option and took out all the other colours in the background so I had a plane white background, now the image will blend well with the main poster design.

This is my fifth final design. I am happy with the final look of the key and the position of the text. I feel its very simple yet moving. I think that there could be a better style of key I could of used but I found it difficult to get one that is much older. It also links well with minimal poster design research and i will use the type of design in any other ideas I come up with.
