Development for my own personalised Union Jack

At first I began to research into different styles of the union jack so that I could get some ideas for my own. For example from my research I've learnt that there are many different shades of reds and blues used in the flag and its also given me an idea to use paint. Also looking at certain designs of the flag I've noticed that some are very abstract and modern, this will be my aim for my flag.

After looking at my research I began to create my own union jack. I used the measurements 10cm by 6.4cm and began to create them. At first I used one of my favourite materials, sponge. Then for my second design I used an ordinary paint brush and acrylic paint, this one however I feel is much bolder than others and the red is too bright for the flag, so I know i won't be using this one for my posters. Now the third and fourth one were also both used with paint but in different ways. I chose to simplify the third one as sometimes it can work well and can still be as effective as the others, where as the fourth one I flicked paint over it to create a modern look. Although, after using sponge and paint brushes I then experimented with my last two and altered the shade of the blue and included white paint.

Although my sketchbook ideas for the flag are an option, I decided to experiment a little further during my time at work experience, I did this because in the workplace they had a printing machine where I could create my own designs and roll ink onto them to create a print. At first I rolled paint onto my design and printed it onto a piece of A4 paper, then after it had dried I flicked red and white paint onto my design to create and arty look to it. In my opinion I am going to choose this design for my poster, as I feel it is abstract, vibrant and attractive to look at, therefore it will draw more attention to the poster and make it stand out to the viewers.

I also tested out my design by drawing it and then laser cutting it into a wooden sheet. I then did the same as i would with paper and rolled the ink onto the wood and printed it onto the paper. This design however was a lot trickier, as I chose to include writing this meant that in photo shop I had to reflect it so that when it was being laser cut the words were the correct way around.

After deciding on a suited flag for my posters I scanned my image into photoshop and began to edit it. I started by saving the original image just incase anything was lost, then I went into image - adjustments and effected the levels of the photo. I then went into selective colour and removed the cyan, magenta, yellow and black this was so the photo became a lot bolder and brighter. After that I repeated this three times just to make sure I got all the other colours out and the white stood out more. Then I added my own technique and increased the red in the photo just so that the white stood out more. Finally I dragged it onto my British values posters and measured them up correctly with the measurements 25mm by 16mm.
