My first design for the British Values poster

After looking into each meaning of the five British values I started with Individual Liberty. The definition for it is to have your own rights, freedom of speech and that we are all equal. So this lead me to research into the meaning of freedom. I then discovered that there was a certain animal that symbolises freedom and that is a bird, from that point I knew I was going to include it in one of my posters. However I then looked further into this and researched back into bauhaus, as shown on the screenshot I found a picture. This photo included lots of lines, I then had a thought that part of the photo looks like jail bars, this then lead me to placing black rectangular blocks around the bird and putting thick black lines behind the bird as if it had broken free. This also explains the triangular pieces scattered around the bird. After thinking that I could make it more detailed I decided to see what it would look like with a wooden textured background on it, in my opinion I don't like it as I feel it takes away the intense feeling of the bird symbolising freedom also it makes it to busy and detailed which isn't the look I should be aiming for.

Consequently, I then removed the textured background and used a simple colour to make the bird area stand out more. This also links with the minimal poster design which is a good option as I think it is very effective and informative. I am still going to experiment with different colours for the background such as greens and blues.

Lastly, I then experimented with several other colours such as dark and light blues and a bold green. After doing this it narrowed down what colours not to use and which colours don't suit the poster. For my final colour I am going to use the darker blue, as I feel it makes the black stand out and the college logo. Also Ive tested a few different types of text to find one that is well suited to the poster and Ive decided to use "impact", this is because it is bold and makes the poster noticeable.

After looking back on research and experimenting with different colours Ive decided to use various types of greys and edit the opacity of the bird and the black rectangles. I did this because I felt using a bold colour was a good idea at first but after realising that its too bright and doesn't appeal to my audience (14-20 year olds and older) I changed the colours to greys and blacks to create a modern classy look to my poster. Also experimenting with text I for my final one I decided to use helvetica but the light oblique version as the bold style would not suit the poster.
